Embrace the Outdoors: October Play Ideas for Young Children

October’s crisp air and colorful leaves make it an ideal time for outdoor play. At Tree Frog Play, we encourage parents to take advantage of the season with fun activities that keep children active and engaged. Here are some ideas to get your little ones moving and exploring the great outdoors this October.

One of the best outdoor activities is a leaf scavenger hunt. Head to a local park or your backyard and create a list of different leaves for your child to find. Encourage them to collect leaves of various colors, shapes, and sizes. Not only does this activity get your child moving, but it also helps them learn about nature and develop observation skills. After the hunt, bring the leaves home to create an art project, extending the fun indoors.

For a more structured play session, consider setting up an outdoor obstacle course with a Halloween twist. Use fallen leaves as part of the course—maybe they have to jump into a pile or weave through a path of leaves. If you have a playroom rock climbing wall, finish the course with an indoor climb to keep the active play going even after the sun sets.

As long as you dress and be prepared for a little weather, your child likely won't blink an eye at a little rain or wind. In fact, studies show, exposing children to all types of weather helps with development.

At Tree Frog Play, we believe in the power of outdoor play, especially in a season as vibrant as October. Whether your child is collecting leaves, navigating an obstacle course, or climbing indoors, these activities are sure to keep them entertained and active all month long.
