Frequently Asked Questions

Planning

How big are the panels?

Each panel is 46 inches long, 23 inches tall, and stands 1.5" proud from the wall. They are designed to be stacked in arrays to allow you the flexibility to create any size wall you want!

Can you do custom sized panels?

We don’t do customization at this time, but you can cut the panels to fit your needs. Just make sure they are properly supported.

Please note, if you choose to cut your panels the warranty will be voided.

The image below is what the panels look like on the backside. To make sure the panels are properly supported make sure the frame around the outside is intact where you will be screwing into the wall.

When mounted horizontally this means only the two long sections need to be there, and the end sections can be trimmed off without compromising strength. When mounted vertically the opposite is true, the short sections are needed and the long sections can be trimmed.

Is hardware included?

Yes! All the hardware needed to install your panels come with them, including a few tools.

Please note if you are purchasing the panels individually only one layout tool is included with each panel. Also, the 3/8-16" bolts are shipped with holds and not included with the panels.

What size wrench do I need for the climbing hold bolts?

A 5/16 Allen wrench is needed for the 3/8-16" bolts included with your holds. You can use a hand held wrench, or if you plan to install a lot of holds we recommend getting a bit for your drill/impact driver.

5/16" Hex Driver for Impact Drill

5/16" Allen Wrench (Hand Tool)

How should I arrange the holds on the wall?

For most children's walls a random even distribution is a great place to start. As they get used to it you can move the holds around to create specific challenges. You'll get the hang of it quickly, and as the kids get older you can involve them in the process!

Check out our Climbing Wall Gallery for inspiration.

What kind of walls can I mount these to?

Our panels can mount to just about any wall with a few exceptions.

Good to Go:

  • Drywall and Wooden Stud
  • Brick/Cinder Block
  • Concrete/Cement

Need additional reinforcement:

  • Metal Stud Walls
  • Adobe/Plaster Walls

If you have one of these you'll need to get a contractor to help you reinforce the wall first.

How do I make sure my children are safe when climbing?

Safety is always the first priority at Tree Frog. To make sure your little climbers are safe, always make sure the following are observed:

  • Always use a spotter. Make sure someone is supervising at an appropriate level to the child's ability. For small kids this means being right there with them, hands at the ready.
  • Use adequate padding. Make sure the floor around the wall is protected with a pad rated for the level of climbing you are engaging in. Our pads are great for most any residential indoor application.
  • Make sure the area is clear of obstacles. You don't want anyone falling onto a table, chair, or stray toy.

What size climbing wall do I need?

Our average order is for 3-6 panels, but range from 1 to 20+.

In general, bigger is better. For very small children, a 3 panel wall is usually enough to have a wonderful experience climbing up and down. As they get bigger, having more room to move around is a huge benefit.

The custom wall builder doesn't offer the combination I'm looking for.

What ages can climb?

Just about any! Children tend to take to climbing intuitively even before they can walk. As they grow our panels grow with them, all the way to adulthood! Our panels are engineered to support users up to 250 lbs, something that really sets us apart.

Can I paint my panels?

Yes! We offer limited color options, but that shouldn't limit your creativity!

If you want some texture, start with our white panels. The more coats you apply the less you'll feel the texture. No need for a primer, you can jump straight to the topcoat.

If you want them as smooth as possible, start with our birch panels and add a primer.

Our recommendations:

Primer: Seal Grip Gripper

Topcoat: Scuff X by Benjamin Moore

What is the weight limit?

The weight limit is 250 lbs, rated for static (vs dynamic) climbing. This means they will work great for anyone under 250 lbs climbing in a controlled manner, not doing jumps and swings. Please do not attach ropes, swings, or other devices that allow you to swing from them. Unfortunately they are not rated for this kind of activity.

Can I install these on the ceiling or at an incline?

Yes, but you will need to use all 6 screws that come with your panel and connect to 3 studs/joists. You will also need to resist the impulse to attach anything you can swing on from them (see "What is the weight limit?").

Can I install these vertically?

Yes, but they will need to align them with your studs. Each panel must connect with two studs. When mounting horizontally you have much more flexibility.

Can I use holds I have purchased somewhere else?

Yes! Our panels interface great with almost any bolted, gym standard hold. Just make sure you use the correct hardware (see below).

Avoid:

  • Cheap plastic kids holds that require two bolts, these won't work. Often found on outdoor playground walls and common on Amazon.
  • Screw on Holds. These can work if you wish to screw into your panels, but you will damage the appearance of the panels if you ever choose to move them.

What kind of bolts work with your panels?

Our panels use 3/8-16" threaded inserts, same as the wall at your gym (US), so you will need 3/8-16" bolts. The face of the panel sits just over 1.5" away from the surface it is mounted to, so we recommend that you use bolts that extend between .75" and 1.25" past the base of your holds.

Is Tree Frog affiliated with Megalith Climbing?

Yes! We are sister companies that share the same history and engineering resources for creating climbing and playroom solutions. Tree Frog was born specifically to help customers looking to build playrooms!

If you are looking for a wider selection of climbing holds please check out what Megalith Climbing has to offer!

How do these attach to the wall?

The panels mount directly to the studs in your wall using four screws. For more details on this process check out our Installation Guide.

Can I install these vertically?

Yes, but they will need to align them with your studs. Each panel must connect with two studs. When mounting horizontally you have much more flexibility.

Can I use holds I have purchased somewhere else?

How tight should I tighten my holds?

We recommend using between 10-15 ft.lbs of torque when using our panels. That means good and tight! If using a hand wrench that about as tight as you can get it, with an impact driver simply go until you hear the impact mode engage. If the holds spin on you, try tightening a bit more.
